Spaghetti Bolognese

The classic — rich, slow-simmered beef and tomato sauce over spaghetti. A family dinner staple that never gets old and pleases every age group.

Ingredients

  • 400g (14 oz) spaghetti
  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 carrots, finely diced
  • 2 stalks celery, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Grated Parmesan, for serving

Instructions

  1. 1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Cook onion, carrot, and celery for 6–8 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  2. 2. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, for 8 minutes until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. 3. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes. Add crushed tomatoes, broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  4. 4. Simmer uncovered over low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is rich and thick.
  5. 5. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water before draining.
  6. 6. Toss spaghetti with the sauce, adding a splash of pasta water to loosen if needed. Serve with grated Parmesan.
