Baked Mac and Cheese

Ultra-creamy homemade macaroni and cheese with a golden breadcrumb topping, baked until bubbly. The ultimate crowd-pleasing comfort food kids go crazy for.

Ingredients

  • 300g (10 oz) elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Cook macaroni in salted boiling water for 1 minute less than package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. 2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens (about 5 minutes).
  3. 3. Remove from heat. Stir in cheddar, mozzarella, mustard powder, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  4. 4. Combine sauce with cooked pasta and pour into a buttered baking dish. Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and scatter on top.
  5. 5. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbling. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.
